The
Kings of Leon are a band of relatives that formed together in the late 90's. Brothers Nathan Followill, Caleb Followill, Jared Followill and their cousin Matthew Followill were signed to
RCA Records and released their first album in 2003.
This album, entitled Youth and Young Manhood, featured on this album are the bands first EP entitled "Holy Roller Novocaine" along with "California Waiting", "Spiral Staircase", "Wasted Time", "Genius", and "Molly's Chambers".
The origins of the band started as the brothers traveled throughout the South with their father; a Pentecostal preacher.
The boys were home-schooled and devote god-fearing Christians. The Holy Rolling stopped when their father Leon, who they named the band after, resigned from the church and divorced his wife.
This resulted in the two oldest brothers moving to Nashville in search of a career in music.
After rigorous and intense band practices, and picking up younger brother Jared and their cousin Matthew, they had formed a rock solid band. Ready to conquer the world by storm.
The band was a hit over seas and their record sold well in the U.K.
This prompted the band to continue work on a second album which is titled Aha Shake Heartbreak which surfaced in the music scene in 2005. Hits from the album include "The Bucket", "Pistol of Fire", "Four Kicks", "Kings of the Rodeo", "Rememo" and "Red Morning Light".
As the rock and roll show continued for this daring band of musicians they began work on their third album amply titled Because of the Times. This work contained the tracks "Black Thumbnail", "My Party", "On Call", "Knocked Up" and "The Runner".
The next year the band releases their smash album Only by the Night. This album has received heavy air play with the songs "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody".
Other tracks from this album include "I Want You", "Cold Desert", "Manhattan", and "Be Somebody". It's on this album that the band has really begun to showcase their music style.
Their style can often be described as a new twist on Southern Rock. However, with such a vast diversity of styles within their music, it is hard to narrow it down to just one genre. I definitely like their music and can see this band doing great things.
Their earlier stuff was very raw but it had that energy that a band needs to survive. The newer stuff is sounding even better and I’m continued to be impressed by this band and their performance so far in their career.
The thing I like best about them is that their music sounds very easy going and laid back. Some of their stuff has an almost Doors feel to it. It’s definetly not the Doors but it may be Doors inspired. This is purely speculation of course.
The Kings of Leon are great to listen to in the car. Maybe it’s just me, but it makes great driving music. Some of their stuff is really slow and bluesy and they have good rhythm. Good rhythm is important to have as a band.
